Associated with Woraksan National Park, Oksunbong Peak is located in Goegok-ri, Susan-myeon, Jecheon-si. Considered to be the 8th out of the Ten Scenic Views of Jecheon, the peak is also included in the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang with Gudambong Peak due to its geography.

Oksunbong Peak was originally associated with Cheongpung-gun (currently Cheongpung-myeon, Jecheon-si) in the early days of Joseon. After seeing the superb sight of Oksunbong Peak, Ginyeo Duhyang, who was prized by Toegye Lee Hwang, the governor of Danyang, requested that the peak be placed into Danyang-gun’s jurisdiction.

However, the governor of Cheongpung declined her request. In response, Lee Hwang named the peak Oksunbong Peak after the stone walls that made up the wall, which resembled bamboo shoots rising up to the sky, and inscribed “Dangudongmun” to make it into one of the gates leading to Danyang.

In addition, Joseon literary scholars Takyeong Kim Il-son, in his book “Yeojiseungram”, and Cheonghwaja Lee Jung-hwan, in his “Sansurok”, praised Oksunbong Peak’s beauty. Also, Jeong Un-ho, who led the fight against the Japanese invaders during the end of the Joseon Dynasty with General Yu In-seok, sang of the Eight Scenic Views of Jecheon and picked Oksunbong Peak as the 7th Scenic View.

Danwon Kim Hong-do was named the governor of Yeonpung, Chungcheong-do for skillfully drawing King Jeongjo’s portrait. At that time, he created “Oksunbongdo” (1769). This painting is a part of “Byeongjinnyeonhwacheop” (Album of Paintings from the Byeongjin Year), which is considered National Treasure 782.

As such, the shape of Oksunbong Peak is complemented by Cheongpungho Lake to create an exceptional scenery. Although the mountain is relatively small, at a height of 283m above sea level, looking down from the peak to the bottom can be quite frightening. The vast peak boasts a wide interior where visitors can take a break. Old pine trees add to the sight to top off the peak’s beauty. In addition to hiking, we recommend taking the ferry to see the beautiful stone walls of Oksunbong Peak and Gudambong Peak.

To prevent forest fires, entry is not permitted between March 1 to May 31 in the spring, and November 15 to December 15 in the fall.
