Jeongbangsa-Trail is a course where you can enjoy calmness and tranquility,
clean and fresh valley water, and a view reminiscent of a fairy wonderland
Jeongbangsa Temple is a branch temple of the Jogye sect’s Beopjusa Temple of Songnisan Mountain and is located on Sinseonbong Peak
of Geumsusan Mountain, which is 1,016 meters above sea level. It is said that the temple was established by Uisangdaesa and is over a thousand years old.
As you hike to the temple, you can enjoy the fairytale-like view of Cheongpungho Lake and nearby mountains. You feel the great wonders of nature.
Jeongbangsa-Trail is the trail that takes you to Jeongbangsa Temple.
The entrance of Neunggang Valley is the entrance of Jeongbangsa-Trail. The valley is one of hidden valleys
of Geumsusan Mountain, and is said to be so beautiful that it is as if it was embroidered on silk.
Neunggang Valley contains Eoreumgol Valley, which forms ice even in the midsummer, and has been a well-known summer retreat for a long time.
Directly under the temple, there is a parking space. Most tourists usually come and park their cars there and visit Jeongbangsa Temple.
But it is only 2.5km from Neungganggyo Bridge to Jeongbangsa Temple.
Walking along the forest path to the temple and back takes just 2 hours.
Move from Cheongpung towards Danyang and pass ES Condominium to see Neungganggyo Bridge.
It is an entry for Jadeurak Trail Course 2 and Jadeurak Trail Course 3. Park there, use the left sloping path, and come down to the valley,
where the path is divided into two: Jeongbangsa Temple and Eoreumgol Valley.
Follow the big path and continue 100m on a bumpy road to arrive at a bridge. A huge broad rock with the smooth flat surface,
a small valley, graceful pine trees, and the flowing cool water all harmonize to make a fascinating site. That is Neunggang Valley.
After that, Jeongbangsa-Trail is a cement trail. Fortunately, the forest is so deep and dense that the sun won’t bother you much.
However, the trail is quite steep, so you’d better prepare to sweat during midsummer.
It is great to have a cooling valley next to a trail where one car can manage to pass through. You can stop wherever you want to take a rest from the heat.
Walk 2.5km more and pass two parking areas to reach Jeongbangsa Temple.
At the entrance of the temple, there is a cableway to deliver goods.
Climb up the stone staircase around the left slope and pass the stone gate acting as Iljumun Gate to come across a toilet.
It is recommended that you drop by the toilet before entering the Buddhist sanctuary. The toilet hides an amazing view that will let you instantly forget your fatigue and worries.
Through the little windows you can enjoy the picturesque Cheongpungho Lake as if it were a water painting.
Pass the toilet to see a big Beomjonggak standing directly above it. Its height is 193cm and its diameter is 120cm.
Over the precarious Jonggak, towards the east, you will see the superb view fromed by the grand and eminent mountain terrains of Mangdeokbong Peak and Geumsusan Mountain.
Next, enter the yard of the sanctuary, there will be an overwhelming rock standing behind Wontongbojeon Hall.
The rock is called Uisangdae Pavilion, and is approximately 3 times bigger and higher than the sanctuary.
The highlight of Jeongbangsa-Trail is the view from the yard of the sanctuary.
As you stand with your back toward the sanctuary, you can see Cheongpungho Lake and the layered mountains around the lake at a glance.
They look like something from straight out of a fairy tale. Everything seems grand and beautiful, as if you were seeing the nature of heaven and earth itself.
Bibongsan Mountain, which looks like it’s about to fly away, the picturesque Geumsusan Mountain, Cheongpungho Lake with dark blue waters,
and the ridge of Woraksan Mountain of Baekdudaegan Mountain Range spread out in harmony in front of your eyes.
Seokgansu coming from the crack of the cliff behind of Wontongbojeon Hall is yet another delicacy of Jeongbangsa-Trail.
The sweet and cold water instantly quenches your thirst, and is available all year round.
Jeongbangsa Temple was established in 662 (the 2nd year of King Munmu in the Silla Dynasy). It is said that after Uisangdaesa
found enlightenment, he threw a walking stick to build a temple. The stick flew here and hit the ground, and the temple was built here as a result.
On the way from Wontongbojeon Hall to Jijangjeon Hall, there is a smiling Haesu Gwaneum (Seafareres' Avalokitesvara) Statue. It was built in 1993.
After preparing for a broad stage with Uisangdae in the background, the Lotus Pedestal was put on the stage,
and then the standing statue was put on the top. It is a granite statue with a height of 415cm. Many people come
and pray as the statute has a gentle and merciful smile
Jijangjeon Hall is far to the left side of the Haesu Gwaneum Statue. It is a three-room building standing against the rocky wall.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is enshrined in the hall using the natural rocky walls. On the way back,
you will see two grand but bent pine trees.
Located in the middle of a mountain, Jeongbang Temple may be small,
but embraces the vast sky view. When you look up the sky, all your idle thoughts will be gone.
