Yakcho-Trail is the 7th course of Cheongpungho Jadeurak Trail, and circles around mountain villages.
The course starts from Jigok-ri’s Gosugol Valley, where people from areas submerged due to Chungju Dam reside, through Dojeon-ri, Seokgok-ri, and Ulji-ri before returning to Dojeon-ri.
It is a rare course that offers lots to see and experience. Particularly, after the completion of Jadeurak Trail, there will be a ferry running between Oksundaegyo Bridge and Gosugol Valley as well as a horse farm which offers horse cart rides.
On top of that, if you include the Cheongpung Kim Clan Tomb and Korea Book Museum, it will the place where you can take a rest, have fun, and enjoy history and culture in one place. Moreover, you can also enjoy the great views of Cheongpungho Lake, Geumsusan Mountain, and Woraksan Mountain.
Yakcho-Trail starts from Jigok-ri Gosugol Valley in Susan-myeon. Most of the village people here are from the areas submerged due to Chungju Dam, which was completed in 1985.
The water in front of the village was once their home. Before the completion of Chungju Dam, Jigok-ri was a big village. Now, only about 10 houses in a line located on a narrow valley with the mountain slope against their backs. The Shrine of Pyo Clan has remained the same because all the house timbers were moved and used to rebuild the house before being submerged.
Yakcho-Trail leads from Gosugol Valley, along the path of the Lakeside of Cheongpung, to Dojeon-ri. In the future, JadeurakTrail will have a ferry running between
Oksundaegyo Bridge and Gosugol Valley, and medicinal plants and trees will be planted along Yakcho-Trail. Pass Cheongpungho Lake, to find Jigokcheon Stream flowing on the right side of the path.
Beyond that, you will see Cheongpung Kim Clan Tomb which is clean and well-kept. Cheongpung Kim Clan is a noble clan that has produced 8 Jeongseungs, 3 Daejehaks and 2 queens during the Joseon Dynasty period.
From Cheongpung Kim Clan Tomb at the entrance of Dojeon-ri village to Seogok village there is a two-lane expressway.
Pass the hill with ginseng fieldsto come across Yukpanjae Gallimgil. Farmers are working on pepper and corn fields under the blazing sun. Enter Seogok-ri Homusil Village, where tobacco drying sheets on the mud wall look oddly charming.
Homusil Village, which gets it name from its hoe-like shape, is a little mountain village with around 10 houses. Neighboring natural villages include are Banggol, which is called such because it is surrounded by mountains on all sides, Habanggol,and Sangbanggol. Yakcho-Trail
circles around this Homusil Village.
동쪽 지릉의 섬천이씨 묘에 올라서면 As you climb up the tomb of Seomcheon Yi Clan on Jireung in the east, you will see Gosugol Valley, the entrance of Yakcho-Trail at a glance.
When you reach the observatory on the ridge, you can view the whole landscape from there.
Geumsusan Mountain, Woraksan Mountain, and Cheongpungho Lake form a picturesque view.
The landscape embracing mountain villages here and there like the mountain wind looks peaceful and gentle. It seems like a ideal location for graves, with its back to the mountain and facing the water.
There are tombs scattered around here including some tombs of Jinju Gang Clan and Cheongpung Kim Clan.
Yakcho-Trail comes 30m down from the Cheongpung Kim Clan Tomb and leads to the left ridge. You should be careful not to get lost due to the dense bushes and scrubs.
Once some work is done on the forest, like pruning and thinning, it will be report as a refreshing path with a good view. On the sloping ridge, pass by the habitat with outstretching Korean pines and another tomb of Jinju Gang Clan to reach a forest fire watch house.
There is a thick growth in the woods large enough to shadow over people but the view is as great as the one from the observatory.
Soon you will reach Yukpanjae (Homusiljae). The village has produced 6 ministers, so the name of the village was derived from it.
Once you arrive in Naedong Village, you will find a sign that says ‘Korea Book Museum’, which was built on the closed school site of the former Judong Elementary School.
It is a dilapidated place full of weeds. But the museum possesses over 300,000 books.
Director Yang Yongnam has collected them for 30 years.
Yakcho-Trail is like a treasure found in an unanticipated place; there is so much to enjoy. But it seems you have to wait a while to see ’Yacho-Trail’ functioning as a proper road.
