Oksunbong-gil

Oksunbong-gil, the 5th course of Jecheon Cheongpungho Jadeurakgil, comes down from Yongdam Falls, where Noksaek Village-gil ends, and begins at the road past the landmark engraved with the words ‘Geumsusan Mountain Trail.

’ From Sangcheon-ri this course passes through Songho-ri and ends at Oksundaegyo Bridge towards Oksunbong Peak. The path is plain and easy but makes you fidget. From Sangcheon Sansuyu Village you have to walk until Oksundaegyo Bridge to see ‘Oksunbong Peak’. It seems that it makes hikers anxious, as if they are on their way to meet their lover.

‘Oksunbong Peak’ is also called as Sogeumgang Valley because the scenery is so beautiful that it was designated as Scenic Site 48. The name came from the shapes of the white and blue peaks, which resembled bamboo shoots. They shine like jade in harmony with Cheongpungho Lake. Due to its mesmerizing charms people put it on the list of both the Ten Scenic Views of Jecheon and the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang.

Sangcheon Sansuyu Village

Walking down from Yongdam Falls leads to a friendly village. Sangcheon-ri got the name ‘Sangcheon Sansuyu Village’ because there are lots of sansuyu (Cornus officinalis) trees in the village. In summer you cannot see sansuyu (Cornus officinalis) flowers but you might be able to imagine yellow flowers blooming on the healthy tree branches in the next spring. In front of Sangcheon-ri Village Hall, there is a huge and magnificent pine tree that appears to be guarding the village. Around the tree there is a rest area which can accommodate at least 50~60 people. Under that, a clean stream flows. If you put your feet in the water, you will instantly forget the heat. There is an interesting episode about the rest area around the pine tree. Dool Kim Yongok came here to give a talk under the tree. His grandfather had lived in Sangcheon-ri so the village was like a second home to him. That’s why he came here to give a special lecture.

Sangcheon Chamsutbul Gama

As you walk out to the east from Baegundonggyo Bridge, pass Sangcheon Rest Area and then climb the slope for 5 minutes to see Sangcheon Chamsutbul Gama. Here is one of the few places that makes its own hardwood charcoal. It is a well-known place among those in the know. One of the reasons it became popular is the easygoing nature of the master, who is memorable for his bushy beard and red face.

Songho-ri

Walk back and head to the west. Directly after passing the three way-crossing, you can find the Cheonha Daejanggun and Jiha Yeojanggun, which are taller than a person. After them there continues a slim ‘S-line’ path. Walk slowly following cherry trees along the road sides. Walk for 30 minutes to reach a rest area, and Cheongpung Lake will begin to show its pleasant view. While enjoying the view of cool Cheongpung which wards off the summer, carry on walking. Cheongpungho Lake resembles the sea, so wherever and however you go, you’ll feel as if the sea is following along with you. The sea is not blue but it doesn’t bother you. It is not easy to see the golden sea embracing Jecheon, Danyang and Chungju. A 10 minute walk takes you to the rest area where some stone pagodas are standing. There is a temporary toilet which marks the middle point of the entire Oksunbong-gil. After Sangcheon Rest Area, there will be no place to get some food until Oksunbong Rest Area. Because of that, you’d better buy some snacks or have food in advance at Sangehon-ri.

Oksundaegyo Bridge

Under the blazing sun the asphalt path is melting. It is interesting that there is always a shady resting spot whenever you feel thirsty and tired. Walk further and there will be a cute road with pine trees and a pine mushroom sculpture which is one of Jecheon’s specialties. After that you will feel Oksundaegyo Bridge getting closer. Walk for more 20 minutes and there will be a rest area where lots of sculptures are put on display. This place also has a temporary toilet. From the rest area, it takes 5 minutes to reach Oksundaegyo Bridge. You feel like you can touch the bridge. As you see, Oksunbong-gil is not a difficult trail because there are several rest places and toilets along the path. People consider the path good for driving, but walking and feeling the path offers an entirely different experience. Climb up the stairs on the other side of Oksunbong Rest Area for 5 minutes, there will be Oksunbong Observatory. Finally you can see the whole Oksunbong Peak. Looking over from the rounded pavilion the waterway looks distant.
