Cultural Heritage Introduction

This stone statue of the Buddha, which was originally at the entrance of the Daegwangsa Temple in Eup-ri, Cheongpung-myeon, was moved to the present location because of the construction of Chungju Dam. The overall sculpted design is representative of techniques used around the 10th century. The top of the head, which resembles a topknot, is very small but retains a formidable appearance; the square-shaped face gives off a virtuous impression. The narrow but thick eyes, the wide nose, and the clear philtrum come together to bring out the gracious presence of Buddha.

The two ears fall to the shoulders and the three wrinkles on his neck are illustrated in an orderly fashion. His clothes cover both shoulders but the silhouette of the body is well-covered because of the thick fabric impression. A knot is placed on his waist, and the U-shaped creases fall almost naturally underneath it. His right hand is raised with curved fingers, while the fingers on his left hand are straight and showing outwards. Placed about 3m from the statue, the original pedestal is an eight-sided padmasana shaped like a lotus flower and features an engraving of the flower.

From its confident shoulders to its massive expressions, the statue exudes the power of Buddha statues from the Unified Silla period. However, the statue also retains styling cues from the Goryeo period, such as the uniform wrinkles on the neck, unrealistic expressions of hand movements, and unnatural depiction of body.
