Cultural Heritage Introduction

Jecheoncheongpunghyanggyo Confucian School was a regional educational institute built to enshrine the ancestral tablets of respected Confucian scholars, and for the education and reformation of the people in the region. It is said to have been built during the time of King Chungsuk of Goryeo (reigned from 1313-1330, 1332-1339). Though it was originally located in Multae-ri, it was moved to Gyo-ri in the 3rd year of King Jeongjo of Joseon (1779) before being moved to its current location as a result of the construction of the Chungju Dam. Currently, Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, the Dongjae, Seojae, and Naesammun remain.

The building is in a front-school and rear-shrine shape, which places the education space in the front and the memorial service area at the back. Dongjae and Seojae, the living quarters for the students, are to the left and right of Myeongnyundang Hall, where the students gather to study. To the back is Daeseongjeon Hall, which enshrines the ancestral tablets of sages, as well as Dongmu and Seomu. These areas are for memorial services. In the Joseon Dynasty, the nation gave the school land, texts, and servants to teach the students. However, the Gabo Reform of 1894 stripped the school of its educational capabilities, leaving it only the ability to hold ancestral rites.
