Cultural Heritage Introduction

Originally designated as Namdeokmun Gate by busa Yi Gihong in the 28th year of King Sukjong of Joseon (1702), this gate was rebuilt by busa Yi Jikhyeon in the 7th year of King Gojong (1870). Palyeongnu Pavilion is a pavilion with a hopped-gable roof that served as a gate controlling access to Cheongpungbu.

Once you climb the stone stairs on the north, the pavilion stands firmly on top of stacked arches, befitting its role as a Seongnumun Gate. Inside, railings surround the checkered floor. The pavilion earned its name after the Poem of Palyeong, which recited the Eight Famous Spots of Cheongpung and was composed by busa Min Chisang during the reign of King Gojong.

It was moved to its present location in 1983 as the construction of the Chungju Dam would have flooded Eup-ri, Cheongpung-myeon, where the pavilion was originally located. In the vicinity are several attractions such as Uirimji Reservoir, Bakdaljae Natural Recreation Forest, Muamsa Temple, Jungbangsa Temple, Wolaksan National Park and many more. Cheongpung-myeon, where this pavilion is located, is also famous for their seafood restaurants that feature hyangeo hoe (Sliced Raw Leather Carp) and maeun-tang (Spicy Fish Stew).
